True Field of View Calculator

Calculate TFOV using Eyepiece Field Stop and Telescope Focal Length

Input Parameters

Calculation Formula
TFOV = (Field Stop × 57.3) ÷ Focal Length

Where:

  • TFOV = True Field of View (degrees)
  • Field Stop = Eyepiece field stop diameter (mm)
  • Focal Length = Telescope focal length (mm)
  • 57.3 = Conversion factor from radians to degrees (180/π)

Understanding True Field of View

True Field of View (TFOV) is the actual angular width of sky visible through your eyepiece-telescope combination. It represents how much of the night sky you can see at once.

Application for Binoculars

For variable power binoculars that use standard eyepieces, you can determine the maximum usable field stop to prevent vignetting by calculating with known eyepiece parameters.
